What is post-modernism? Impact on I.T/Business?

“Postmodernism is largely a reaction to the assumed certainty of scientific, or objective, efforts to explain reality. In essence, it stems from a recognition that reality is not simply mirrored in human understanding of it, but rather, is constructed as the mind tries to understand its own particular and personal reality. For this reason, postmodernism is highly skeptical of explanations which claim to be valid for all groups, cultures, traditions, or races, and instead focuses on the relative truths of each person. In the postmodern understanding, interpretation is everything; reality only comes into being through our interpretations of what the world means to us individually. Postmodernism relies on concrete experience over abstract principles, knowing always that the outcome of one’s own experience will necessarily be fallible and relative, rather than certain and universal.”

I found this at http://www.pbs.org/faithandreason/gengloss/postm-body.html

I thought it was the best explanation i could find as well as understand…

to me it means that post-modernism introduce grey into our lives when there was once upon a time just black and white. It forced people to re look at what they considered fact and force them to question everything .

The impact on I.T and business:

1) Scientific paradigm no longer the ONLY way to do “REAL” research

2) Interpretation of subjective research is valid.

3) Often combine scientific and  non-scientific approaches.

4) Choice of approach is determined by the question you are researching.

How do we know something is “True”? (or why do we believe something is true?)

I tend to believe what i see…. its harder to believe in something that has been said and you have not witnessed it like “God”…

That’s when belief comes into play that you want something to be true so with out proof visually or scientific proof we  except what we are being told….

I am a person in the middle… I want to believe miracles happen and that there is good in the world but with so much violence visually shown it is hard…. With regards to the rest of the things i tend to believe in what people more knowledgeable than myself say…

class discussion :…….1) What u believe 2) Real in a general sense because people accept it as real( money and its value) 3) It exsists without observation( gravity is what it is)

What is the difference between “Knowing” something and “Having knowledge of”….?

I think…..

Knowing is a self belief that you have the answers …..where

Having Knowledge is actual having facts and academic proof that what you are saying

The class definition was ……. Knowing (verb) how to drive a car because you have done this to ” having knowledge” as in given a Manuel to learn how to drive doesn’t mean they can drive….

What is Research now after todays class?

After today’s very enlightening class i have decided that research is bigger than ever expected. There are so many “Ways” that it can be accomplished.

This being a “Personal” research or “Academic” Research. From a casual looking at car prices to decide on buying a car ( looking on trademe or asking friends or looking in the newspaper) to a clinical trial for a new drug and following a method that could be repeated so your findings can be collaborated or disproved to doing a “Critical” , “Systematic” Research.

Once someone has done this there are  people then that can then look at what you have done and either disprove or prove your findings.

Research to me is so much more and still so much i dont understand. WHere do u start? when do u stop? Is what we are reading true?  I am now left with so much more to think about ….

Difference betwen Qualitative & Quantitative research?

Class discussion:  Quantitative Research is collecting multiple measured data,

Qualitative Research is about exploring people and their opinions can be small sample of data.

I took this explanation from “Sweetie Pie”  because after reading it i felt i understood clearly the difference.

“Quantitative research requires that the researcher have a clear idea of what is being studied before beginning the study. Quantitative research requires a process to be defined before beginning the research and for that process to be followed while gathering and analysing data. Quantitative research involves precise, numerical data. Quantitative research attempts to be objective.

Qualitative research on the other hand does not expect the researcher to have a clear idea of what is being studied. Rather than following a fixed process the research process changes as the researcher learns more about the topic and what they actually need to research. Qualitative research does not produce facts and figures but in a complete description of the subject of research. Qualitative research is subjective. “

What is Epistemology

“Defined narrowly, epistemology is the study of knowledge and justified belief. As the study of knowledge, epistemology is concerned with the following questions: What are the necessary and sufficient conditions of knowledge? What are its sources? What is its structure, and what are its limits? As the study of justified belief, epistemology aims to answer questions such as: How we are to understand the concept of justification? What makes justified beliefs justified? Is justification internal or external to one’s own mind? Understood more broadly, epistemology is about issues having to do with the creation and dissemination of knowledge in particular areas of inquiry. This article will provide a systematic overview of the problems that the questions above raise and focus in some depth on issues relating to the structure and the limits of knowledge and justification.”

This was found http://plato.stanford.edu/entries/epistemology/

So all this means to me is that Epistemology is the study of knowledge and its questions on how we go about achieving this knowledge.

What is an Ontology

“ Ontology deals with questions concerning what entities exist or can be said to exist, and how such entities can be grouped, related within a hierarchy, and subdivided according to similarities and differences.”
